Tooth loss can pose both aesthetic and functional challenges. Fortunately, with modern medical technology, innovative solutions like dental implants are available. In this article, we'll explore what dental implants are, how they work, and the benefits of implant treatment. Additionally, we'll provide tips for proper aftercare to ensure the success of your implant procedure.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are metal prostheses inserted into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. Made from durable materials like titanium and zirconium, these implants mimic natural tooth roots, providing stability for the prosthetic tooth or crown. An implant generally consists of two main components: the body (which goes into the jawbone) and the abutment (which supports the prosthesis).
How is Implant Treatment Carried Out?
Implant treatment typically involves two stages: the surgical phase and the prosthetic phase. In the first stage, the implant is inserted into the jawbone. This is usually done under local anaesthesia, although general anaesthesia or sedation might be used in some cases. Once the implant is in place, a healing period is required to allow the bone to integrate with the implant. This process, known as osseointegration, usually takes several weeks to a few months.
To ensure proper placement of the implant, advanced imaging techniques like CT scans are often used. This allows for precise measurements to determine the correct size and diameter of the implant. In cases where bone density is low, additional surgical procedures such as bone grafting might be needed.
The Advantages of Implant Treatment
One of the key advantages of dental implants is that they function like natural teeth and are long-lasting. With proper care, implants can last for many years without issue. In addition, implants provide a more natural appearance compared to other tooth replacement options.
Implant treatment also has the benefit of preserving adjacent teeth, unlike traditional bridge treatments that may require altering surrounding teeth. Furthermore, dental implants can help prevent complications arising from tooth loss, such as problems with chewing, speech, or jaw alignment.
Aftercare for Dental Implants
After the implant procedure, it's important to follow specific care guidelines. Since the implant placement involves surgery, some swelling and mild discomfort are common. To reduce swelling, you can use ice packs, but each application should be limited to about 5 minutes to avoid affecting blood flow in the area.
Here are some aftercare tips to keep in mind:
- Avoid hot, cold, or hard foods for the first 48 hours.
- Refrain from gargling or rinsing your mouth for the first 24 hours.
- Be gentle when brushing your teeth during the first week.
- Minimise or avoid smoking as much as possible.
When Shouldn't You Opt for Implants?
Although dental implants are suitable for many people, there are some cases where they might not be ideal. For example, those with severe bone loss, active infections, or uncontrolled diabetes may face higher risks. In such cases, other treatment options might be considered.

Thank you for your interest. Dental implant treatments require 2 visits. We place dental implants on the first visit, which takes 10 minutes per implant. Then we need to wait 3 months for healing of implants. On the second visit, we place crowns over implants. One dental implant cost £500 solely. We have full mouth implantation packages called All on 4 and All on 6 systems. All on 4 system cost £5700(8 implants, temp crowns and permanent crowns in total for both upper and lower arcs). All on 6 system cost £7400(12 implants, temp crowns and permanent crowns in total for both upper and lower arcs). For more detailed information, please kindly call or write us from +44 7387 117787.
